Introduction: many young people initiate their sexual life without the necessary information about the methods of prevention of the diverse risks to whichthey are exposed. Objective: this study had the objective of investigating among university students from the health area their behavior concerning thecontraception and prevention of sexually transmited deseases. Methods: the data was obstained through the application of a questionnaire of 21 objectivequestions, approaching biographical data and related to the sexual practices which were analyzed by Epi Info program version 3.3, the test of the qui-squarewas used (÷2) to test associations between the variable, fixing for the statistical tests the level of significance of 95%. Results: the results show importantdifferences between the feminine and masculine sexual behavior, mainly in relation to the age of the first sexual experience (18,3 and 15,9 years); partner inthe first sexual relation (52.2% of the men had related to have had it with an accidental partner), current partnership (85.5% of the women had affirmed tohave fixed partner), number of partners in last the three months and use of condoms (found men tend to use it 80% more). The contraceptive method morefound was the condom, even so in the context of the relationships cited as staple, they are neglected by the use of hormonal contraceptives. A significantoccurrence of pregnancy and abortion were verified. Conclusion: this study disclosed that even dealing with people of a higher degree of instruction, theimplantation of educational politics in the scope of the sexuality is still necessary.
