The (dis)information regarding penicillin use in the brazilian health system

the case of syphilis

Abstract

Introduction: the antibacterial effect of penicillin has been recognized for more than 60 years, but the drug is still being used incorrectly. Bacterial infections with clear indications for the use of penicillin, such as congenital syphilis, are still a public health problem in Brazil. Objective: this paper identifies and discusses aspects related to the problems of the use of penicillin in the Unified Health System, using as an example the situation of syphilis. Methods: systematic review of technical-scientific publications related with penicillin use, both in Brazil and in other countries. The main reference of this study is the case of syphilis in Brazil. Results: high risk situations for penicillin use, antibiotic resistance, allergic reactions, as well as diagnosis and treatment of anaphylactic reactions are discussed. Conclusion: we conclude that the erroneous interpretation of technical documents, the inadequate training of health professionals, economic interests and the inability of the health system to manage anaphylactic reactions are situations which may cause the insufficient use of penicillin in congenital syphilis.
